Crop Criteria

The farmers that are Known & Grown are committed to protecting our environment through their practices.

By being environmentally-responsible, their farming avoids the use of synthetic chemicals that pollute our soil and water when overused and treat animals humanely—providing fresh, nutritious food to consumers and institutional buyers and helping the St. Louis Foodshed thrive. Below are some of the practices that are required and recommended for this goal.

Conservation Practices

Conservation crop rotation

Cover crop

Integrated pest management

Nutrient management plan

No till

Riparian herbaceous cover

Pollinator habitat enhancement plan

Drip irrigation

Required Criteria

  • Must be within 150 miles of St. Louis (special considerations can be made when no other farmer in the network grows a particular crop within 150 miles of St. Louis).
  • No synthetic chemicals. Only use fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other biocides on USDA National Organic Program List and OMRI+. Never use synthetic fertilizers.
  • Farmers near farms that use conventional chemicals must create an adequate buffer to prevent drift.
  • Click here for an expanded list of recommended practices, which include drip irrigation, integrated pest management, pollinator habitat enhancement plans, and more.
