The Golden Beet is our designation for farms that go above and beyond the standards for joining Known & Grown STL.
Farmers that have the Golden Beet designation on their Farmer Profile page are exceptional stewards of our shared environment.
In order to gain the Golden Beet, crop farmers must use water conservation practices, use integrated pest management, and have a pollinator enhancement plan. Golden Beet farmers also tend to use Certified Organic seeds and starts, create compost onsite, and not till their soil.
For livestock, farmers must use integrated pest management, fence animals to prevent them from entering waterways, use grass and/or Certified Organic feed for their animals, and never use synthetic chemicals on pastures. Additionally, livestock farmers with the Golden Beet must meet strict ethical standards for animal treatment, including raising heritage breeds, not dehorning cattle or putting nose rings in pigs, not docking tails, and avoiding overuse of farrowing crates.
